Sustainable Natural Rubber Initiative (SNR-i)

Posted on 29 May 2014

The Member Governments of the International Rubber Study Group (IRSG) welcomed the Sustainable Rubber Project Initiative (SNR-i) as a contribution to the sustainability and transparency of the rubber field. This was announced at the annual meeting during the World Rubber Summit 2014 held in Singapore last week.

The SNR-i is an initiative of the Industry Advisory Panel of the IRSG. It is being developed as a voluntary and collaborative rubber industry value chain activity -through a working group composed of industry and producers’ representatives of the whole rubber value chain1. The IRSG Secretariat has contributed to it as the facilitator

As a voluntary industry guidance, the final Sustainable Natural Rubber Criteria and Indicators approved by the SNR Working Group will be published on the IRSG Website so that the document is publicly available free of charge to any interested entity.

The IRSG and SNR Working Group will meet at least once a year to review the Sustainable Natural Rubber Criteria and Indicators and related procedures. During these annual meetings, the IRSG and the SNR Working Group shall review the development of the SNR Initiative, propose appropriate measures to ensure that it reaches the long-term objectives, and propose any amendment required to maintain the Sustainable Natural Rubber Criteria and Indicators and related procedures up to date.

The Medium Term Road Map highlights the following key milestones:

  • June – December 2014, hold a series of stakeholder meetings with governments from both the producer and consumer sectors plus major industry stakeholders from throughout the value chain, and civil society representatives.
  • January 2015 – launch the SNR-i based on voluntary participation of the natural rubber value chain operators; participants declare compliance against the sustainability standards outlined in the Sustainable Natural Rubber (SNR) Criteria and Indicators2.
  • January 2016 – IRSG will prepare and issue the first SNR-i implementation report.
  • As from January 2017 – IRSG will facilitate the periodic review of guidelines/standards through the SNR Working Group and Industry Advisory Panel, which will be scheduled every three years, from there on.

A further announcement in the near future will give details of the opening of the dedicated IRSG website focused on this Initiative.
